2023 IH Review Course @ Zoom

The New Jersey Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (NJAIHA) is offering a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Course. The course is designed to provide basic training in some critical areas of industrial hygiene and will likely be beneficial for those entering the field as well as those who are just looking to sharpen their skills in certain technical areas. In addition, many of the people who have attended the program have found it to be very helpful in preparing for the CIH examination. Certified Industrial Hygienists have the opportunity to obtain CM points per lecture (0.167 points per contact hour). Participants are welcome to attend any or all of the lecture sessions, depending on their individual training needs.

All classes will be presented virtually via Zoom or pre-recorded presentations, except for the 8/15/2023 class which will be held in-person (venue TBD) . Participants will be provided with the schedule and Zoom login information before the first class. Classes will begin on June 13th, and are scheduled from 6pm-9pm. 2023 NJAIHA Professional Development Courses @ Zoom

The NJAIHA will be hosting Professional Development Courses (PDCs) on Thursday, November 30th, the day prior to the Northeast Industrial Hygiene Conference (NEIHce). The PDCs will be presented virtually on Zoom.

Courses Include:

  • Course #1: (8:30am-11:00am) Process Safety Management: Making the IH Connection

Presented by Lydia Trainor, CSP, and Andrew Reed, CSP, Enforcement Programs, Federal OSHA Region 2

Lydia Trainor started her career with OSHA in 2010 as a Safety Specialist in the Parsippany Area Office. She currently works in Enforcement Programs at the OSHA Region 2 NY Regional Office. She is a member of the Region 2 PSM Inspection Team, assisting local area offices with their PSM inspections and providing CSHOs with hand on training in PSM. Prior to OSHA, Lydia worked in private industry as the site EHS Manager at the GE Biosciences Piscataway Campus.

Andrew Reed, CSP started working for OSHA in 1997 as an Industrial Hygienist in the Albany, NY Area Office.  During his career with OSHA, he has held positions as an Industrial Hygienist, Safety Specialist, Assistant Area Director, and most recently as a member of the Enforcement Programs group in the OSHA Region 2 New York Regional Office where he is a member of the Region 2 PSM Inspection Team.  Andy is a self-professed  “jack-of-all trades, master of none” safety professional.   In his spare time, he competes in USATF Masters road races at distances from 5k to the marathon and enjoys working on old Swedish cars in his garage.

Description:

  1. What is PSM – determining coverage, CPL update, policy changes
  2. Standard overview – highlight of the elements.
  3. Noteworthy Subjects – retail exemption, pyrotechnics, supply chain issues, rail car coverage
  4. IH in PSM – topics may include…ergonomics, noise, respiratory protection (escape hoods), Hazmat/chemical clean up, introduction of chem hazards from contractors, non-routine/maintenance activities, area monitoring, personal detectors.

  • Course #2 (12:30pm-3:00pm): Building an Ethical Foundation for Occupational Safety and Health Programs

Presented by Nancy Orr, CIH, CSP, FAIHA

**This course fulfills the ABIH ethics requirement for CIH recertification maintenance credit.**

Nancy Orr has over 40 years of experience in the occupational safety, health and environmental protection fields.  She is the owner of Sage Health and Safety, LLC, a NYC based firm providing comprehensive safety and health consulting services, since 2018.  Prior to opening Sage Nancy was the Senior Director, Environment, Health and Safety, Global Operations at Becton Dickinson and Company (BD), a multinational medical device and life sciences company with manufacturing operations in 24 countries. She started her career as an OSHA Compliance Officer and Industrial Hygienist for two major insurance companies, and Manager of Health and Safety at ITT Corporation in NY.

She has also served as a Councilor of the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene, a Trustee of the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation, and has held several offices of the Metro NY AIHA section.  She is a CIH, CSP and Fellow of the AIHA.

Nancy has a deep interest in ethics and has shared this enthusiasm in the form of PDCs and seminars sponsored by National AIHA, ASSP and  local and regional professional meetings.  She is also a member of the Executive Board of Safety 4 Nonprofits, Inc- a nonprofit devoted to providing pro-bono safety services to other nonprofits. ”

Description:

This PDC on ethical practice within the occupational safety and health field helps participants develop an increased awareness of the nature of ethical issues, how they arise and how they may be resolved. This includes  an examination of how recent deliberate ethical lapses by business leaders have seriously damaged the financial and reputational futures of some of the world’s revered brands.  From this starting point we will explore the following:

  • Understanding the nature of personal values and their role in guiding conduct
  • Applying tools and skills to analyze ethical dilemmas
  • Exploring the differences between legal, illegal, ethical and non-ethical positions
  • Learning to identify and resolve potential ‘conflict of interest’ situations
  • Making higher quality ethical decisions

Participants in this course will :

  • Acquire essential skills necessary to make higher quality ethical decisions
  • Examine the role of personal values and their application to decision–making
  • Explore how to resolve situations where truth conflicts with loyalty; justice and mercy
  • Discuss several resolution approaches to dilemmas in search of “the higher right.”
